Fortresses and castles in the Valsugana

Fortresses and castles in the Valsugana

There are many castles in the Valsugana bearing witness to the historical events of the past. In some of them there are guided tours and others which can only be admired from without. One of the most important is the Castle of Pergine, a magnificent medieval fortress on the top of ‘Colle Tegazzo’. Until now it is the only castle in the Trentino with a hotel inside it.

Worth visiting is also a very suggestive walk in Arte Sella, at the foot of ‘Cima 12’. Here you can see an open air exhibition of artistic works created by professional artists using stones, rocks, tree trunks, leaves, branches and other natural elements.

The lakes of Caldonazzo and Levico Terme

The lakes of Caldonazzo and Levico Terme

If you are looking for some peace and quiet in the sun; if you love water sports or pleasant walks in nature, the lakes of Caldonazzo and Levico are the perfect destination. You can swim from May to September, there are bathing facilities and well-equipped free beaches with lifeguards present in July and August. The lakes have received the Blue Flag award for years thanks not only to the clear waters, but also the well organised accommodation facilities in the surrounding areas. The lake of Caldonazzo is the largest lake in the Trentino and is famous for water sports such as canoeing, dragon-boat, water skiing and swimming. A beautiful cycle path runs along its east side and connects Caldonazzo with Pergine. The Colle di Tenna (Hill of Tenna) separates it from the smaller lake of Levico, a body of water surrounded by woods, two well equipped beaches and a very large free beach, where you can relax on the grass in the shade of glorious big trees, have a picnic or have fun on the beach soccer, beach volley and basket ball courts. Near the beach there is a large game area and an open air gym with modern equipment for abdominals, squats, legs and arms and balance exercises. The very pretty path of the ‘Pescatori’ (Fishermen) which continues right around the lake through the woods is well worth walking.

Military fortifications and border trenches

Military fortifications and border trenches

There are, in the area, fortifications, trenches, military observatories and trails, all relics of the First World War. At certain periods of the year it is possible to visit some of the structures and sometimes guided tours or artistic and cultural events are organised with the aim of remembering and reviving these places.
